Vasarely avant l’op is organised thanks to the partnership initiated five years ago with the Centre Pompidou.

Following “La révolution permanente” in 2019, “Sud-Est, le constructivisme en héritage”, “Europe de l’Est et Amérique du Sud” in 2020-2021 and “Modernités cosmiques” in 2022, “Vasarely avant l’Op, une abstraction européenne, 1945-1955” is dedicated to a selection of 35 major works from the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Musée départemental Matisse, the Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris, the Hartung-Bergman Foundation, the Marta Pan Foundation, the Denise René Gallery and private collections.

Vasarely’s beginnings are linked to the Galerie Denise René, whose opening in 1944 marked the painter’s appearance on the art scene, with the exhibition “Dessins et compositions de Vasarely”. Unknown to many, Vasarely had been working as a graphic artist in advertising and poster design since the 1930s. He met Denise René in 1939 and, united by the same desire to commit to life, they planned to transform the family milliner’s workshop that she ran with her sister Lucienne into a gallery.

VASARELY AT THE AIX HOSPITAL

mediation-hopital-fondation-vasarely-newsletter-septembre-2023

In 2023, our Audience Department will be continuing to develop its cultural mediation activities in the medical and social field, thanks to the partnership it has forged over the last 8 years with the Pays d’Aix Hospital and the support of the Association Sourire d’enfant.

We have seen the remarkable impact that art can have on hospitalised children through creative workshops. When children come into contact with art, something magical happens. Drawing, painting, colouring, abstract and geometric shapes, not to mention bright colours – all these elements help to create a moment of escape, if only for the duration of a workshop. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone involved for helping to make this a memorable and meaningful experience.

Nice-fondation-vasarely-newsletter-septembre-2023

Espace Lympia, Nice
until 22 October

This exhibition reveals a variety of Vasarely’s works, including studies, paintings and multiples, illustrating his constant desire to create and share art for all. In 1959, in the age of the first computers, he created the Plastic Alphabet, a product of the Bauhaus, combining simple shapes, primary colours and binary circle/square geometry. This became a plastic language based on algorithms, anticipating Computer Art and modern technologies such as augmented reality and 4D.

The exhibition revisits this movement from a global perspective, highlighting Vasarely, Calder, Stella and their peers, as well as contemporary heirs. A spellbinding journey where art and science come together to create unique visual perspectives.

“I’ve often said that the art of the privileged must become the art of the community. The important thing is to have resolved this change technically and plastically.”
