The NFT Universe Paco Rabanne & Fondation Vasarely series will be launched on 12 April 2022. The collection includes 12 NFT works by Victor Vasarely and 12 “Unwearables” by Paco Rabanne. The NFTs will be on sale at universenft.live powered by Selfridges and Charli Cohen, with prices ranging from €600 (£500) to €220,000 (£185,000). Purchases can be made directly from MoonPay, a financial technology company that builds payment infrastructure for crypto-currencies, via NFT Checkout – an industry-first solution that allows users to purchase an NFT instantly with a credit or debit card. This first series of NFTs features 12 monumental works by Victor Vasarely in the form of tokens, most of the proceeds of which will be donated to the Vasarely Foundation in Aix-en-Provence, an architectural centre designed and funded by the artist himself. Six of the NFTs are architectural integrations that need to be restored.
A further six will be coded with a smart contract programmed to refresh the design metadata to reflect the condition of the works directly on the NFT. Repairs will take place once a year over a two-year period. The Vasarely Foundation is the first cultural institution in France to create NFTs.

The NFT collection is part of Universe – a collaboration between Selfridges, the Vasarely Foundation and Paco Rabanne. Universe explores the work of optico-kinetic movement pioneer Victor Vasarely (1906 Pécs, Hungary – 1997 Paris, France) and his avant garde contemporary Paco Rabanne through physical and digital experiences. The NFT series can also be seen in Selfridges’ flagship shop in Decentraland until 14 April. The launch offers an immersive journey with Paco Rabanne and the Vasarely Foundation, in a space inspired by Selfridges’ iconic Birmingham shop.
Thanks to this presence in the Metaverse, alongside Selfridges and Paco Rabanne, the Vasarely Foundation was able to participate in the first ever digital fashion week in Decentraland, a virtual reality space dedicated to crypto-currency users.
For his first couture collection in 1966, Paco Rabanne presented “12 wearable dresses in contemporary materials”. Today, the brand is taking the concept of “wearable” a step further, uniting the past, present and future with NFT dresses based on 12 of its most iconic styles from the past seven decades. One copy of the Paco Rabanne “Unwearable” Rhodoid Crystal Cape NFT dress from the Spring/Summer 1969 Haute Couture collection includes an invitation to visit the Paco Rabanne atelier to create a bespoke, customised version, which will require 200 hours of intricate work, 5,600 Plexiglas diamonds and 18,000 brass rings to assemble. The other 1/1 of Haute Couture, Autumn/Winter 90/91 is the metallic black “Samurai” top, mini-skirt and headpiece. The “real” version of this model will require 220 hours of work in the workshop, with 5,000 pellets and 10,500 metal rings, and will be reproduced with the original mould.

[2] Non-fungible: a unique digital identifier that cannot be copied, substituted or subdivided. [3] Metaverse: a virtual reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users. [4] Crypto wallet: Crypto wallets keep your private keys – the passwords that allow you to access your crypto-currencies – safe and accessible, allowing you to send and receive crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.
[5] Smart-contract: Smart-contracts are essential to the operation of non-fungible tokens. They are mainly pieces of software code that allow the network to store information in a transparent and immutable way. In short, it is this code that controls these digital assets known as NFTs. [6] Custodial wallet: Traditional crypto-currency wallets such as MetaMask require you to access your funds using private keys, which you cannot forget or you will lose access to your funds. Custodial wallets, on the other hand, hold these assets for you.

“Giving to see” and “bringing art to the street” are the founding postulates of Vasarely’s work. are the founding postulates of Vasarely’s work, which claims to be modernist in that it prefigures the foundations of contemporary plastic research. “The work that has become an object, thus detached from a plastic complex, exhibited, possessed, pampered for its own sake, is singled out and frozen under the species of this unique function, a poetic function, now serving only a refined elite” (Victor Vasarely, 1963).
